What is a Chinese Soft Shell Turtle?

Chinese softshell turtlePelodiscus sinensis, are an almost entirely aquatic freshwater turtle. They grow to approximately 10 to 12 inches in size (shell front to back) and once full size they can be kept happily in 200 to 300 litre aquariums. Unlike Terrapins, soft shells are not basking species and spend most of their time in the water. When buying soft shells from hatchlings it is quite easy with regular handling to make them tame and friendly.

How do I keep a Chinese Soft Shell Turtle?

An ideal set up to keep Soft Shell Turtles would be a glass aquarium with a filter (to keep water clean), a heater (to keep water at a constant 25 degrees), and UVB light (to encourage correct shell growth). They also need a landed area where they can get out of the water such as a Turtle Dock. It is important to remember that it takes three to four years for a hatchling Soft Shell Turtle to grow to full size and therefore to help socialize the Turtles, It is much better to keep the hatchlings in a smaller enclosure (30-40 litres) to start with, Upgrading to a larger home as they grow.
IMPORTANT! Soft shell turtles get their name because they have a soft delicate shell which can be easily damaged, both physically and with fungus. They love to bury themselves in the substrate, So to avoid them damaging themselves on rough/ sharp gravel always use fine sand. To ensure good water quality, always do regular water changes.

What do I feed my Chinese Soft Shell Turtle?

Soft Shell Turtles are omnivores and in the wild would eat vegetation and such things as fish and insects. For you pet Turtle however, There are various complete dried and frozen foods that contain all of the animals dietary requirements.

How big and what sex will my Baby Chinese Soft Shell Turtle be?

The baby Soft Shell Turtles we sell are approximately two inches long (Shell length front to back). Due to their small size and juvenile status we are unable to sex these Turtles.
